D of E Emergency rations

You will need to carry a small amount of food know as D of E emergency rations for the duration of your journey. Your assessor will expect these rations to still be intact at the end of your expedition.

D of E emergency rations should be sealed away in a watertight type container and only used in the case of emergency. it is best to seal this container so you are not tempted to eat them when you fancy a snack, you should be carrying enough food to complete your expedition without breaking out these rations.

As with all food that will be carried on expedition this should be light, compact and nutritious, it needs to be high in calories and protein, enough to sustain you for an extra day should you find yourself in an emergency situation. Lots of people carry nuts and raisins or cereal bars, these are all good but be sure that they are not consumed by anyone with a nut allergy.

A small  plastic food container such as a small sandwich box, remember we are trying to travel as light as reasonably possible while walking in the hills, is ideal for this and I would recommend taping it up with electrical tape or something like that, remember you will need to get into it in an emergency, so as to avoid temptation.

I would normally choose food that I wouldn’t normally eat so I wouldn’t be tempted to eat them for the sake of it. On the other hand, if you choose to pack your favourite snack then you would have something to look forward to on completion of your expedition, just don’t be tempted to eat it before the end. Most good assessors will take you for an ice cream or burger at the end of your expedition, we know what you like!
