Plates Bowls and Mugs

There’s a huge range of camping plates and cups available and they don’t have to be expensive, they’re just for eating from!

Whether you go for a cheap plastic option or a more expensive option there’s plenty to choose from:- click here. For the type of food you will probably be eating then a bowl is going to be the most suitable, there’s no point carrying a range of plates and bowls when you will likely only use one. My preference is a collapsible bowl as most have sturdy bases that can also be used for chopping food on while flat, turn into a bowl when you need it and pack flat again for easy packing.

As far as mugs go then any cheap plastic mug will do the job but I prefer to get a little more technical than this. My preference is a seal-able Thermos type mug as this will give greater flexibility when cooking. Gas is a precious resource while on expedition and anything you can do to save it is a good thing. If you are using dehydrated food and just need to add hot water to your meal then a Thermos mug will do this more efficiently than trying to keep water boiling on your stove for several minutes, you just need to boil the water and add to your cup, put the lid on and wait, the cup will keep the water plenty hot enough to fully rehydrate the food and the added bonus is there is no chance of boiling dry and burning your food!

You can also use your Thermos style cup to make a hot drink or soup before you set out for the days walking and enjoy a hot drink or meal at lunchtime without having to set up a stove, much quicker and easier especially on a cold wet day when you don’t want to be hanging around for too long at lunch stops.
